Today, we discussed the short narrative piece entitled "Dad" by Andrew H. Malcolm. We discussed theme and techniques for uncovering the theme of a text. We also practiced writing theme statements.
We then viewed a prezi presentation on the six-word memoir. Students then practiced writing some of their own. Some of the terms that we went over in class were: Theme Plot Structure--and the terms that go with this term Imagery Abstract Concrete Literal Figurative Inference Memoir Flash Fiction Understatement HOMEWORK: Students were asked to create their own, original six-word memoir Today was our first full day of class forthe A Schedule.
All three pre-AP English classes did the following activities today: Students particpated in a get-to-know-each-other activity called conversation cards. Students brainstormed for questions that are good to ask when trying to get to know someone better. Students spent time discussing what makes some questions better than others and why some questions might be considered inapropriate or awkward. Each student composed a list of three questions and then went around the room asking their fellow students the questions that they composed. Students then shared with the entire class what they learned about someone else in the class. Stud.ents shared what they know about annotating a text and then read and annotated the poem "Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle from a Friend Called Felicity" by John Tobia. --Homework-- Due next class period: Students need to be prepared to discuss "Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle from a Friend Called Felicity" by John Tobia. Letters to parents need to be signed and returned. Students need to have all of their classroSom supplies by the next class period. These supplies are as follows: a composition notebook, a two-pocket folder, a box of Kleenex, and magazines and/or other images that will be used to personalize their comp notebooks. |
